What is a fire damper?
A fire damper is a type of ‘passive’ fire protection product. They are built into the ductwork systems of heating, air conditioning (HVAC) and ventilation systems as crucial parts of fire safety. In the event of a fire, fire dampers are designed to stop the spread of fire and smoke by closing. This will reduce the spread of the fire, stop further property damage and will protect the lives of those within the building.
How does a fire damper work?
As mentioned, fire dampers are built into the ductwork systems of heating, air conditioning (HVAC) and ventilation systems. They pass through fire-rated walls and floors and if a fire were to occur, they use roller shutter-style mechanics to spring shut.
What is a fire damper inspection?
Fire damper inspection and testing are crucial to making sure that fire dampers can effectively function in the event of a fire. Fire dampers can suffer from rust, disintegration and dirt or dust-filled mechanics, which if a fire should occur, could hinder their performance. Here’s what we will check for during your fire damper inspection and testing:
- An inventory of all fire dampers within the building and where they are located is created.
- We will inspect for signs of corrosion, damage and obstructions.
- Each fire damper is activated and physically ‘dropped’ to check effectiveness.
- We will check that channels and runners are cleaned.
- We will provide advice on damaged dampers that need to be repaired or replaced.
- The dampers will be reset.
What happens after fire damper inspection and testing?
Once we have completed your fire damper inspection and testing, we will give you a report confirming your compliance with legislation BS 9999:2017. This contains before and after photographs of each fire damper, its location, and its number. This can be given to a Safety Compliance officer if required to confirm the fire safety of your building.
How often do fire dampers need to be inspected?
It is now a legal requirement for fire dampers to be tested every year. We highly recommend putting a plan in place to ensure that you remember to have them checked.
Receive Reports & Certificates…
Insurance companies will typically recommend a minimum frequency at which the systems should be cleaned and maintained. Adherence to regulations and recognised guidance is essential for building insurance as well as meeting the minimum Duty of Care that you have to your clients, employees and the public. We are fully accredited by NAAD and are licensed to provide you with reports and certificates for your systems.
